Cydia – Why and How to use it?

Cydia is for jailbroken devices only!

One the the benefits of jailbroken devices, if not the ultimate benefit, is the right to install and use Cydia. Cydia is an application, like the AppStore, which has all the third party applications you can find. This is happening by adding to Cydia repos or sources. Repos or sources are something like servers that contain all the third party jailbroken apps. If Cydia does not have any repos or sources in it, then you will not be able to download and install non of the apps.

What repos/sources Cydia contains?

Currently in Cydia there are 5 default repos/sources added and they are the following:

  • Cydia/Telesphoreo (http://apt.saurik.com/)
  • Dev Team (http://cydia.pwndevteam.com/)
  • ZodTTD & MacCiti (http://cydia.zodttd.com/repo/cydia/)
  • ModMyi.com (http://apt.modmyi.com/)
  • BigBoss (http://apt.thebigboss.org/repofiles/cydia/)

With those sources you will be able to download and install the majority of the most popular thirdparty applications, but other sources are available for you as well.

How to add new repos/sources in Cydia?

After completing the jailbreaking procedure Cydia icon will appear to your device. Tap on Cydia icon from your Springboard and on Cydia’s main screen tap the Manage tab. Then tap on Sources and afterwards the Edit and then the Add button. You will now be able to type the repo/source URL and then tap on Add Source button. After completing this step the repo/source is going to get added to Cydia.

What other repos/source Cydia supports?

Some of those repos might contain applications related to piracy or cracked ones, so if you want to be 100% legal do not download any application that might break the law.

iHackStore is a great source, because it contains apps, tweaks, themes, ringtones, mobs, cheats, hacks and many more!

BiteYourApple is another source, but it is based in Italy, which means that the language is Italian. Try to browse it a bit, because it will definitely worth it, it has great applications in it!

On the the oldest and popular source is SiNful iPhone repo. It has anything you can think of and it would be a great addition for Cydia. It also has an official forum with over 350.000 members!
